According to a January 2015 study by Thrive Analytics, websites boost customer engagement for local businesses and many local businesses were seeing more success with their website design than any other type of marketing. In both 2014 and 2015, the number one response by local business owners to which marketing method was the most effective was their website. Website design took the lead over social media, print yellow pages, internet yellow pages, email marketing and even paid search (Google AdWords).
SMBs cited the following as the most effective marketing methods in January 2015.
- 45% Company Website
- 39% Facebook and other social media sites
- 26% Print Yellow Pages
- 15% Internet Yellow Pages
- 15% Email Marketing
- 15% Paid Search (Google AdWords)
In addition to Thrive Analytics findings, HubShout also found a strong interest inwebsite design among local businesses. In fact, 64% of local businesses marketing professionals worldwide said website design and development are the most in demand services trailing only search engine optimization (67%). Website design beat out every option though including social media (38%) and content marketing (37%).
As a result of the effectiveness of their websites, nearly half (49%) of local business owners intended to increase their marketing budgets this year and websites will certainly reap the benefits. Out of all the channels that the researchers polled website design was the number one marketing channel that local business owners expected to increase expenditure on. Following website design, local business owners also planned on increasing their marketing expenditure on social media, mobile advertising, online display ads and paid search.
While local business owners are planning to increase spending on their websites in 2015, many local business owners are strapped for time and don’t necessarily have the time to keep their website up to date. According to data from Thrive Analytics, most local business owners only update their websites quarterly with less than one-third making changes on a monthly basis.
Part of the funds being allocated to website design are going to focus on more frequent updates. If local business owners don’t start focusing more on improved website design and more frequent updates they could risk losing new patients due to out-of-date content especially given that 45% of local business owners cited their website as the most effective marketing tool.
